GRIEF SUPPORT GROUP

Many of us have faced the pain of the loss of a loved one in our lives.  How do we cope with this overwhelming experience?  Our culture offers a traditional formula, which unfortunately, is not always a very good one.  It goes something like this:  once the shock has somewhat worn off, hide away your tears, file your memories, and “get over it,” steel yourself with a “stiff upper lip” frame of mind and go on with your life as “normal."

This approach can actually impede the healing process and lead to physical illness.  Additionally, many of us believe in myths about grief which are just not helpful toward our own healing.  We will explore these myths and the many facets of the grieving experience during a Grief Support Group which will begin September
13, 2010.

This Grief Support Group will be a safe place where we can come together in warmth and understanding, to share our struggles, to meet and encourage each other, educate and support one another, and to appreciate each person's unique grief journey so that we can begin to experience emotional and spiritual growth.

We will be using a respected resource, Understanding Your Grief  by Alan Wolfelt, director of the Center for Loss and Life. This will be available to participants for $15 each at the first meeting.

THE FIRST MEETING WILL BE INFORMATIONAL IN NATURE—
we will explore grief issues and provide an outline of expectations for the following 8 group sessions.  Dar Ellingson will facilitate the group.  If you have any questions, please contact Dar at the church (586-5572).
